A deal between France and Russia for warships would significantly increase Russian naval capabalities. Many members of the US Congress, including Sen. John McCain (Republican-Arizona) are concerned about the deal and have sent letters and messages to the French President Nicolas Sarkozy urging him not to complete the sale. Are some of these lawmakers still in a Cold War mentality?

Yes, "to protect Russian citizens" is, I'm sure, the most likely pretext Russia will use for their invasion and assault of Georgia and Ukraine, which is certain to happen soon.
But I'll tell you straight up: make what assumptions you will about what a Democrat President is likely to do militarily; if you think we will stand idly by while Russia tries to reincorporate Georgia or Ukraine back into the Russian empire, you're a truly dumb ignorant fuck yourself.

NIGGA PLEASEEE :) everybody knows that it was Saakashvili that attacked Russian peacekeeping forces in teh region first, even if Condoleeza Rice tried to prove otherwise in the beginning, the Ossetians and Abkhazians are thankfull to Russia for coming to their aid. reincorporate back in Russian empire? Ossetia and Abkhazia are independtan governments now, not Russian! Isn't that the true democracy, giving in to the will of the people, in this case Ossetian people?

How dumb would you look if Ukraine never got invaded by Russia huh? As an Ukrainian I can say that most Ukrainians consider themselves as friends of Russia. Personally I don't have a problem if Ukraine would be part of Russia, like it was all of its history. But still, you didn't explain to me the difference between US interferance in Yugoslavia, and Georgia-Russia war, except that Russia defended its own people right across the border, US stuck their nose in others bussines on other continent.

Yes, I agree that Georgia rather foolishly initiated hostilities without realistically assessing their capability against Russian combat troops, but the level of Russian response was unnecessary and alarming. If Ossetia wants Russian troops guarding their borders (and is foolish enough to believe Russia will respect their 'sovereignty'), that's their business, not ours.
And if Georgia wants to become a full member of NATO with a new base right on the border, that's their business, not Russia's.

But as far as "true democracy, giving in to the will of the people" goes, how does that same rationale not apply to Chechnya? Is it not the clearly expressed will of those people that they have no more wish to be part of the Russian empire than Georgia or Ukraine?
Almost any argument you make to deny Chechnya should be allowed separation could also be used by Georgia about Ossetia.
What if Kiev declared itself a Free Autonomous City part of the EU?
Would Russia give in to the people's will?

only Georgia and Ukraine don't want to be part of NATO, just the American puppets president that Georgia has, and Ukraine HAD. As for Chechnya, yes it was wrong what Russia did, but Russia isn't going all over the world to "fight for democracy" like US claims it does. US is just using that as a reason to invade, now it uses the "War on terror" reason to invade. And only Americans are dumb enough to believe their government. Still I would like an explanation about Yugoslavia and Ossetia.

If one of the southern US states would like to become part of Mexico, would US allow it? Further, Russians always hated their government, because Russians are smart enough to know when they are lied to. Americans are to dumb to realize it, therefore they love their government. Funny how people always think that Russia is preparing some big evil conspiracy, but it actually never comes to it, in the meantime they miss all the shit US does. 9/11 never freely and fully investigated, what is US doing in Afghan? Guantanamo bay, while lecturing China about human rights, where are the nukes in Iraq, and now the same thing with Iran and only Americans believe what their government is saying because they are (made) to dumb to see the realistic world.

@rusgreek Afghanistan = Caspian Sea oil pipeline. Iran = They also want to build an oil pipeline, but it will interfere with Caspian Sea pipeline. 9/11 = Some shit happened, we still dont fully know what happened.
